Life on the Farm at Kona Sober Living

Healing Through Purpose and Nature

At Walua Farms at Kona Sober Living, recovery isn’t just about abstaining — it’s about rebuilding a meaningful life, grounded in purpose, community, connection and the land. One of the most powerful tools in our program is our working farm, nestled in the lush, vibrant landscape of Hawai’i’s Big Island.

Here, residents experience the deep, lasting benefits of hands-on, nature-based recovery. Every day brings the opportunity to care for the land, nurture animals, and grow nourishing food — while also cultivating a healthier, more grounded self.  Connection to the earth is important in connecting to ourselves.  The soil, the smells, and the texture of working with the land, reinforces mindfulness and gratitude.  A deepening connection to all things.

What We Grow: Roots of Recovery

Our farm is alive with the fruits of healing:

  • Coffee Trees – Learn the full cycle of coffee production, from planting to harvest, gaining insight into patience, discipline, and pride in craftsmanship.
  • Mango & Citrus Groves – Caring for these fruit trees helps residents experience the joy of seasonal rhythms, hard work, and the literal fruits of their labor.
  • Fresh Eggs Daily – Our flock of chickens brings daily purpose, routine, and connection through animal care.
  • Goats, Sheep & Pot Belly Pigs – These animals provide companionship, responsibility, and a non-judgmental connection that supports emotional healing.

Working on the farm helps residents reconnect to the natural world — and themselves — in a way that fosters self-esteem, emotional regulation, and sustainable life skills.

Why the Farm Experience Works in Recovery

The benefits of farm-based recovery are deeply rooted in evidence and experience:

Builds Structure & Responsibility

Daily farm chores offer a reliable rhythm that promotes accountability and routine — essential tools for long-term sobriety.

Encourages Physical Activity

Movement is medicine. Farm work gets residents outdoors, moving their bodies, and breaking a sweat in the sunshine and fresh air.

Supports Mental Health

Interacting with animals and plants has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression — all while enhancing focus, self-worth, and emotional resilience.

Teaches Patience & Persistence

Growth doesn’t happen overnight — in farming or recovery. Tending crops and animals helps instill patience and an appreciation for long-term commitment.

Fosters Connection & Community

Working side-by-side with peers builds camaraderie, teamwork, and shared success — powerful antidotes to the isolation of addiction.
